Kidnapped girl found after 18 years

A US woman who was kidnapped 18 years ago as a young girl, has been kept in a hidden backyard behind her captor's home and has had two children with him, police say.

California law enforcement officials announced in a press conference on Thursday that Jaycee Lee Dugard, who was kidnapped at the age of 11 in 1991, was forced to bear two children at the hands of her abductor Phillip Garrido -- a registered sex offender on lifetime federal parole. The 'prison' she was kept in was placed against a six-foot fence and concealed by trees and shrubs that made it invisible from the adjoining properties, police said.

"Subsequent interviews provided information that only the victim and the kidnappers could know," said Fred Kohler from the El Dorado Sheriff's Department.

Philip Garrido, 58, was with his wife Nancy, when he kidnapped Dugard while the girl was waiting for a school bus, the police official said.

"Dugard never attempted to contact the police or her own family throughout her nearly two-decade ordeal," CBS News quoted Kohler as saying.
